Teen safety a driving force for Kobuchar Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who is both a former county prosecutor and the mother of a 15-year-old, says the two experiences have convinced her that the nation needs stricter standards for kids behind the wheel. "You can change cultures by getting a change of standards out there for the public to listen to," Klobuchar said in an interview for the POLITICO video series "The Politics of America's Youth." "And they start saying, 'You know what? That's a good idea.' So it's really a personal choice, but it's something that they hear about and they start believing in."

November 29, 2007: Seven cheerleaders involved in single car crash into a tree. Three die, 4 injured. The Blount County coroner, John Mark Vaughn, said the girls were laughing, singing and "cutting up" moments before the driver lost control on a straight stretch of road. "It looks like she was just distracted. If you can imagine a bunch of kids in a car like that, it's not hard to understand," he said.

September 21, 2007 - A car rollover that killed two Minnetonka High School seniors happened because the driver was distracted by her iPod, according to the final State Patrol report released Monday. It also said that the other victim did not have an accessible, working seat belt.

2 ARIZONA MOTORISTS KILLED - Distracting Text Message Received by 18 year old

August 15, 2007 - 2 Arizona motorists were killed after an 18-year old woman apparently became distracted by text-messaging on her cell phone while driving, crossed the center line and crashed into another motorist head-on - killing them both. Investigators believe the woman’s pickup drifted across the center line because she was text-messaging on her cell phone immediately prior to the collision.

February 27, 2007 - 28-year old man died after his vehicle slammed head on into a Hummer on Highway 99 north of Sacramento. Highway Patrol suspect man lost control because he was typing on a laptop.

53-YEAR OLD WASHINGTON STATE MAN CAUSES 5 CAR ACCIDENT ON INTERSTATE - Man using BlackBerry

A Mercer Island, Washington man fiddling with his BlackBerry was cruising down Interstate 5's express lanes Tuesday morning in his minivan, oblivious that traffic ahead had come to a dead stop. The 53-year-old man's minivan smashed into a car, setting off a chain reaction that included three other cars and a Community Transit bus, which was carrying 28 passengers.

52-YEAR OLD MAN CAUSES COLLISION IN HAWAII - texting to blame.
